Why is it necessary to use a MEMO or payment tag?

This step does not apply to all currencies or wallets since they do not all use the same technology, but in those that do, it is necessary to identify the recipient of the transaction where the payment will be sent.

These are our supported coins that (in some cases) require a MEMO to process a payment:

• XRP
• XLM
• EOS
• BAND
• ATOM
• LUNC

In most cases those will be provided by exchanges or custodial wallets, since the same address is used for many users at the same time, the only way to differentiate a deposit (on the exchange's end) is by the MEMO or payment tag:

The only exception for this requirement are desktop, paper or hardware wallets, where you have full control of your private key:

For that reason, note that we cannot transfer any fraction of the already mined coins from addresses that have no MEMO (but belong to an exchange), because those funds were accumulated by multiple miners in the past. We restrict mining to these addresses to prevent miners from losing their funds.

The MEMO or payment tag (if necessary) should be written in the following format if you are using a third party mining app:

COIN:YourAddress:YourPaymentID.YourWorkerName

Note the ":" after your address.
